Final SUP Talent Spain Series 2021

Last weekend I was in Jávea, covering the final of the SUP Talent Spain Series 2021 from an audiovisual perspective, an event aimed at discovering the next generation of paddle surf race talent in Spain.

In this final, the technical team—made up of Telmo Irigoyen, technical director of Club de Surf Jávea, and Carlos López, president of the Catalan Surfing Federation (both coaches for the Spanish Surfing Federation)—selected from among the finalists the most complete riders, who would become the SUP Talent 2021: young Stand Up Paddle athletes chosen to be mentored by the Spanish Surfing Federation to help launch their careers in a discipline that may become Olympic in 2028.

Weather conditions that affected the shoot

The weather varied greatly throughout the weekend, which allowed me to capture the athletes paddling in a wide range of conditions.

On Saturday, the training day, light northwesterly winds were present along with completely flat seas. After filming a few aerial shots with the drone to establish the setting in the Bay of Jávea, I boarded a support boat to capture the rest of the day’s footage, following the fleet all the way to Cape San Antonio.

On the second day, the weather conditions became more challenging, requiring both the athletes and the technical team to take extra precautions and put in greater effort. The competitors completed a nearly 5-kilometer downwind section (with the wind) and a 2.5-kilometer upwind section (against the wind), following the coastline. I decided to track their progress from land using a telephoto lens to get a different perspective that would help enrich the final piece.

SUP Talent 2021 Athlets

Nearly a hundred athletes took part in the selection trials leading up to the final stage. The most promising talents selected were:

• Martina Vidal (Be Watersports Club, Alicante) and Eva Díaz (Blue Salt Club, Barcelona) – U12 category
• Alexia Soto (Parres Sports Club, Alicante) and Pablo Vidal (Be Watersports Club, Alicante) – U14 category
• Paula Ruiz (Parres Sports Club, Alicante) and Unax Etxeberria (Kairoscore Sports Club, Gipuzkoa) – U16 category
